PROVENCE – lavender country …

Living amongst the lavender fields of Provence would, for many of us, be a dream come true. Here, just 5 minutes drive from the pretty village of St Jurs, the lavender is in full bloom from the end of June right through to the beginning of August, when it is harvested. Why not plan a trip to this region in early July, when the lavender blooms are at their most beautiful ?

Of course if you were to buy this beautiful property, you could enjoy the heady scent of lavender year after year after year!

PROVENCE: Arles, a town filled with history and art …

Just 35 kms from Avignon and 90 kms from Marseille sits the medieval town of Arles, encircled by outstanding beauty; the banks of the River Rhône, the untamed Alpilles and the wilderness of the Carmargue. Once the centre of the Roman Gauls who left behind treasures such as the Amphitheatre and the Roman Baths of Constantin, dating back to the 4th century. Enjoy the beautiful 16th and 17th century architecture of the many houses and private mansions that line the small streets. Van Gogh enjoyed staying in Arles too, with his friend Gaugain – if you enjoy photography, then this is the town to put on your ‘Places to stay’ list.

PROVENCE – a surprisingly affordable property market …

David Kampfner is our area coordinator for Provence and he told me; “I feel I’m incredibly lucky to be able to call PACA (Provence, Alps, Côte d’Azur) ‘home’ ! This is a region that has everything a person could want in life.

Incredibly scenery, world class facilities, a stunning coastline and a mixture of gourmet restaurants and down to earth bistros offering fresh seafood and local produce to make your mouth water.

We all know that the rich and famous hang out around here, but believe me when I say that there’s plenty on offer for the ordinary family too. For instance, did you know that the average property price in PACA is just €290,600? and that in half of the six départments it’s less than €210,000.

Leggett has around 1,000 properties for sale in this region, take a look here …

ST RÈMY DE PROVENCE – The olive harvest …

With the grape harvest over and the golden colors of autumn arrive in Provence, its time we turn our attention to another important harvest for the region, that of the Olives. These olives in this region yield an oil of exceptional quality and justify the labelling “AOC Provence”-a guarantee of quality. At many of the mills the traditional methods of production are still used.

PROVENCE – Luberon, the very heart of Provence …

Put simply, Provence is: “Spectacular countryside of vineyards and orchards, fascinating “perched” hill-top villages, outstanding natural produce and the light of Van Gogh and Cezanne.

The Luberon is characterised by a series of  picturesque hill-top villages, dating back 1000 years or more – famous names such as Gordes, Roussillon, Bonnieux, Lacoste and Menerbes all come quickly to mind,  but also a host of beautiful villages that are relatively unknown, which you simply must explore! Cadenet is a large and lively village on the south side of the Luberon, very much alive all year. The rings of houses curve around the base of a beautiful medieval castle where much of the ramparts still remain. Climb to the top and enjoy spectacular views down over the river Durance and the Alpilles mountain range beyond.

Visit the Luberon and enjoy the numerous and varied fruit, vegetable and antique markets, hiking in the countryside, canoeing and of course the most popular pastime of them all – house hunting!
